July 4 marks 243 years since the American colonies declared independence from Great Britain, an event definitely worth celebrating with fireworks.
The communities of the Dan River region have been part of that heritage since colonial days, and they’re a great place to celebrate Independence Day with the whole family. Here are just a few of the cool events and fireworks displays happening on the Fourth.

Eden, North Carolina
Eden’s celebrations begin with a parade at 9:30 a.m. and continue through the afternoon with the Eden Kiwanis Ole Fashioned Fourth of July Festival. Gates open and music begins at 2 p.m., fireworks at 10 p.m. In between, enjoy games, concessions, and a corn hole tournament.
July 4 in North Carolina is also free fishing day, when everyone can fish without having to purchase a license.
Martinsville, Virginia
Martinsville Speedway will host the 21st annual Celebration, with music, carnival rides, and a huge fireworks display. Rides open at 3 p.m. Live music starts at 6:30. The fireworks will start following the music. Everyone attending the event is urged to bring non-perishable food and personal care items for the Fuel For Families Food Drive.
Danville, Virginia
Danville hosts a free Fourth of July celebration at the Carrington Pavilion. The event begins at 6 p.m. It features family activities, vendors, concessionaires, and also music by the Danville Symphony Orchestra. Fireworks begin at dusk.
King, North Carolina
King is hosting the Lowe’s Foods Burgerfest, with grilling beginning at 9 a.m. and judging at noon. The entry fee to compete in the contest is $50, with the winner receiving a $500 prize. Proceeds from Burgerfest go to building a dog park at Recreation Acres. Then, check out fireworks beginning at dusk.
Halifax County, Virginia
Celebrate Independence Day at Patrick Henry’s Red Hill. The event begins at 3 p.m., with fireworks at dusk. Patrick Henry served as Virginia’s first governor. He’s remembered for his “give me liberty or give me death” speech. Henry’s home and burial site is the perfect place to celebrate being an American.

Patrick County, Virginia
Dehart Park hosts a variety of free activities for the family during its Old Fashioned Fourth of July. The night ends with a spectacular fireworks show that draws thousands of spectators each year.

Walnut Cove, North Carolina
Walnut Cove hosts music and fireworks on July 3. The Fenders will provide the music, and fireworks follow. The event begins at 6 p.m.
